Bassinet Bedding
There is nothing more lovely than an heirloom bassinet that has been handed down in one family from generation to generation. Most of these cherished bassinets are made of hand-woven wicker which is not readily available anymore. One way parents can personalize both old and new bassinets is with new bedding. Bassinet bedding can range in price from $41 to $300. Bassinet bedding is commonly sold in two and three piece sets. Most two piece sets contain a liner and a hood cover while three piece sets contain a liner, hood cover and fitted sheet.
Shopping for bassinet bedding can be a confusing experience for many new parents. It doesn't take long for shoppers to realize that manufacturers do not use the same component names when describing their bassinet bedding. The most common terms are described below.
A bassinet liner is the portion of the bedding that fits inside the basket (i.e. sleeping area) and lines the sides of the bassinet with fabric. This fabric is often lightly quilted to help buffer the baby from the sides of the bassinet. The bassinet skirt is the piece of the bedding that drapes down the outside of the basket and is usually floor length. Most baby bedding manufacturers merge the liner and the skirt into one piece and call it a bassinet liner or a bassinet skirt. Hoohobber's calls their liner and skirt combination a bassinet cover. The mattress pad should be placed on top of the liner and covered with a sheet which may or not come packaged in the set. Sheets are included in bassinet bedding sets made by Burlington Basket, Badger Basket and Hoohobbers.
There are two sizes of bassinets made for the American market. The smaller of the two is called a standard bassinet with a sleeping pad measuring approximately 13" wide by 29" long. The jumbo bassinet, made popular by Badger Basket is the perfect choice for an infant that needs a little extra elbow room. This roomy sleeping area holds a 16" x 33" mattress. Bassinet bedding is made to fit a 13" x 29" mattress pad or a 16" x 33" mattress pad. Hoohobbers and Wendy Anne make bassinet bedding that will only fit a jumbo bassinet. Badger Basket and Baby Doll make bedding that will fit either size bassinet.
Parents might experience a bit of uncertainty when purchasing bedding for a bassinet (heirloom or new) that does not conform to the mattress sizes described above. For the best fit, it is recommended that you look for bassinet bedding that has elastic around the top of the skirt (smocking) which will help the bedding conform to different size baskets.
