Moses Baskets
Moses baskets, often referred to as portable bassinets and baby Moses baskets, are starting to find their way onto American baby registry's and wish lists. Popular in Europe and considered a necessity by most new moms, Moses baskets are becoming increasing available in the United States. One of the first domestic companies on the scene was Wendy Anne who began making these cozy baskets for babies almost fifteen years ago.
Moses baskets are available in two common styles, natural palm and maize, which are generally imported undressed from China and Morocco. Both styles of basket are hand-woven, so finished sizes may slightly vary. Natural palm baskets measure approximately 31"L x 12"W x 9"H at the outside bottom and slightly flare to 34"L x 15"W at the outside top. Woven handles are usually 6-7" apart and secured to the basket down the and across the bottom. Baby Romance, Baby Doll and Clairebella use this shape of basket for their Moses baskets.
The maize leaf basket is the perfect shape for a baby that is looking for a little extra elbow room. This basket is a bit shorter and wider than the palm basket. Maize Moses baskets measure approximately 27"L x 13"W x 9"H at the outside bottom and noticeably flare to approximately 32"L x 17.5"W x 9"H. The plaited handles are usually 8"-9" apart and securely attached to the basket down the sides and across the bottom. Maize baskets are the perfect shape to showcase bedding which is why they are used by Hoohobbers and Wendy Anne.
A Moses basket is generally suitable for a baby until they reach 3-4 months in age or begin to turn over by him or herself, whichever comes first. At this point, the basket will make a wonderful "bed" for your child's dolls or stuffed animals.
It's important to learn the lingo before shopping for a Moses basket. Basket components generally consist of a mattress pad, sheet, and basket bedding - commonly referred to as a basket cover or bumper. A bumper is generally lightly padded and a basket cover is not. Additional basket components may include a retractable hood, receiving blanket and a rocking stand. The basket and bedding are usually sold together and the complete package is referred to as a dressed basket.
